LaPrele Dam: MBI at the Heart of the Historic Wyoming Dam Demolition
A high-complexity demolition with MBI equipment leading the way
In the heart of Wyoming, just a few kilometers from Douglas, one of the most delicate demolition projects in recent years is underway: the controlled removal of the historic LaPrele Dam, a 135-foot (approx. 41-meter) high concrete structure with over 115 years of history. The project, declared an emergency by local authorities, was initiated after recent inspections revealed new cracks in the dam’s face, pointing to almost irreparable damage to its foundations.
The demolition order was issued by the State Engineer on November 1, 2024. Since then, a joint venture formed by Montana Civil Contractors and Big Sky Civil Constructors has begun preparatory operations, supported by a detailed engineering plan designed to ensure maximum safety and minimal environmental impact.
MBI technology built for the toughest concrete
The project involves the use of ultra high reach excavators equipped with MBI CR20 and CR26 demolition crushers. These tools, designed to handle high-strength reinforced concrete structures, have proven essential for precise and secure high-reach demolitions in even the most critical conditions.
MBI's CR series crushers are known for their exceptional closing force, wide jaw opening, and fast cycle times—features that make them ideal for tackling massive, compromised structures like the LaPrele Dam.
A sustainable and time-sensitive approach
The plan approved by the local irrigation district foresees a controlled mechanical demolition, with the option of using explosives if necessary. Debris will be managed sustainably: part will remain in place to stabilize the area, part will be placed in the LaPrele Creek channel to prevent erosion, and the remainder will be transported to designated disposal sites.
In addition, access ramps, sediment containment structures, and a new southern access road will be built to support logistics and on-site operations. The main demolition work is scheduled to occur before April 2025 to avoid the seasonal rise in water levels, but emergency procedures are already in place to allow for rapid intervention should conditions worsen.
MBI: where safety meets precision
Mantovanibenne's involvement in a project of this magnitude once again demonstrates the reliability and versatility of its professional demolition solutions. In a context where safety, strict timelines, and environmental concerns converge, the performance of MBI equipment makes a measurable difference.
With over 60 years of experience in the field, Mantovanibenne remains a benchmark for major international job sites—bringing technology in action wherever it’s needed most.
